Japan’s national housing information website, Suumo, will offer a service aimed at LGBT, including cohabiting same-sex couples, all over the country starting next month.
The company will develop a database of LGBT-friendly properties coupled with a search function to help LGBT people find suitable accommodation.
A spokesperson from Suumo's parent company, Sumai Company, stressed the importance of providing resources for Japan's LGBT residents.
"There are present conditions where LGBT people are struggling to find property, feeling restricted on living together with their partner in rental houses or refusing to move in themselves,” the representative told PinkNews. “I would like to introduce the owner’s property and support the search for properties.”
Although property agents who cater to LGBT clients aren’t new to Japan, activists and LGBT in the country have welcomed Suumo’s move as an important step for increasing awareness and promoting tolerance.
