Regional HIV and LGBT community network APCOM handed out HERO Awards at a fundraising gala in Bangkok, Thailand, on Nov. 13, recognizing individuals from throughout Asia for their work advancing LBGT rights. 

Eight awardees were selected from among 21 finalists and 350 nominees. 

Three hundred people were in attendance at the event at the Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel, APCOM reported. The network was also simultaneously celebrating its tenth anniversary of working to promote human rights and HIV education, prevention, care, and support.   

Among the “heroes” recognized was Ashok Row Kavi, from India, who received the Shivananda Khan Award for Extraordinary Achievement, in recognition of four decades of work as an LGBT rights activist. The award is named for APCOM’s founder, who the organization describes as a “pioneering hero of the Asia-Pacific response to HIV and LGBT health and rights.”

Other awardees hailed from Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Taiwan, and Thailand, and were recognized for their commitments to HIV activism, community support, health work, and social justice advocacy.
