Partygoers who attended last Sunday's Harbour Party were warned through the grapevine not to consume or be in possession of any illegal drugs. On arrival, Mardi Gras rangers conducted bag searches and metal detection. The Police were also present on arrival and throughout the event.
Bar and security staff were also briefed on how to recognise evidence of drug dealing, reported by the Sydney Star Observer.
In an earlier statement, Harbour Party directors said that the initiatives are based on a series of understandings. Patrons should remember they are in a highly public space and that if they involve themselves in "drug activities" they are compromising the future of the event.
"It is also a very public celebration of the community's place in this city. Members of the general public are walking by and it would only take one irresponsible partygoer's behaviour to spark off a major controversy," Harbour Party director Philip Diment said.
The organisers say they are addressing the need to maintain safety standards at the party while recognising the benefits of harm minimization after three people at last year's party had to be taken to hospital by ambulance.
Information on the risks of drug use was available and roving teams will keep a look out for people experiencing problems at the party.
It is expected that security arrangements for Harbour Party will most probably follow through to some extent to all the major parties.
Tip: Beware of friendly dogs and do not re-wear clothes if you have been around smokers the day before. Police sniffer dogs can quite easily pick up the scent of dope on your clothes.
