dubai nightclub shutdown for hosting gay night

A nightclub in Dubai was shut down by the authorities for hosting a gay night.

A night club was ordered to close by General Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum, Dubai's Crown Prince for hosting a gay night featuring a transvestite DJ from Britain, reported the BBC.

The organisers of United Arab Emirates' first public gay night at the Diamond Club sent out 2,500 flyers inviting part-goers and even organised a best-dressed transvestite contest.

Government officials closed the evening down after going to the club to watch. Like most countries in the Middle East, Dubai officially frowns on homosexuality take a tough public stand against homosexuality despite having a flourishing nightclub scene.

Dubai being the commercial capital of the Gulf and a major international port, is also a transit point of large numbers of prostitutes and home to thousands of expatriates.
