Matthew McConaughey probably thinks he can like Nicolas Cage resuscitate his waning Hollywood career by playing a treasure hunter in a mindless action-adventure-comedy flick ala National Treasure. Well, think again. Fool's Gold is mindless alright, but not in the fun and exciting way it so desperately wants to be.
Walking around shoeless and shirtless for most of the movie can someone please tell him he's not that hot? Matthew is searching for the Queen's Dowry, a legendary treasure trove of gold, jewels and other priceless gems that disappeared in the Caribbean ocean in the 18th century. Helping him is his ex-wife Kate Hudson, who does her best to imitate her mother Goldie Hawn when doing the comic bits.
Though the movie starts off as a knockabout romantic comedy with our golden couple squabbling endlessly, it eventually shifts gear and becomes a rather improbable action ride. Some of the action sequences are cool, while others are just clunky.
Strangely, even though Matthew and Kate have paired before in 2003's How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, their screen chemistry here is somewhat lukewarm. Newspapers reported that Kate couldn't stand Matthew's strong body odour and begged him to wear deodorant, but Matthew prefers to be au naturel. Well, thank God watching movies is only a visual and aural experience!
