Free Download: Heloise & The Savoir Faire 'Downtown'

Creating a mesh of late-70's disco-infused dance punk and 80's synth-pop, newcomers Heloise & The Savoir Faire might remind you of Scissor Sisters, Glass Candy and perhaps even The Gossip. The group is fronted by the charismatic Heloise Williams and backed by two dancers (Joe Shepard and Sara Sweet Rabidoux) and full band (James Bellizia on guitar, Luke Hughett on drums and Jason Diamond on bass).

In a recent press interview, Heloise explains that the group came about in a quest for fun and entertainment. "We like to create a spectacle. We try to create a whole sensory experience, not just one for your ears," she explains. "Also, a lot of the songs have a strong narrative component. It's not
like we're acting them out, but we try to give the songs an element of
drama."

After stirring up a storm playing the New York underground circuit for a couple of years, the band finally got noted by actor Elijah Wood who signed the band to his own recording label Simian Records, which is a joint venture with indie label Yep Roc. "I met Elijah about 3 years ago through a friend. Elijah's a huge music fan, so we got along really well," Heloise says. "Then he came to see the band, and he really liked it. A year or so after that, we were trying to figure out the whole record deal situation, and we had a near miss signing with a label—not a great experience. Then Elijah said, 'Why don't I put your record out?' I couldn't believe it at the time, but now it's really happening."

Check out a totally guilt-free MP3 download of the group's bouncy "Downtown" that features a cameo by none other than '80s icon Debbie Harry. The song is taken from group's debut album "Trash, Rats & Microphones" that is out on Tuesday. (MP3 courtesy of Yep Roc Records)
