18 April 2012 #423

Welcome to another week at the Fridae Movie Club! This week, we have a balanced diet for fans of arthouse and B-movies alike.

Our pick of the week is Delicacy, starring everyone's favourite girlfriend, Audrey Tatou. The quirky romcom follows a beautiful young woman's misadventures in dating and inappropriate office romances following the very early death of her partner.

No, Madam Butterfly 3D is not an opera adaptation of the crossdressing M. Butterfly by David Cronenberg. Yes, the Royal Opera is back this year with another larger-than-life opera in 3D film. The film promises delectable singing, splendid costumes, starry-eyed outpourings of love, and of course the titular character expiring dramatically as the curtain falls.

Horror fans are spoilt rotten this week with Cabin in the Woods. It's about a group of teens (headed by Thor helmer Chris Hemsworth!) who go on vacation and find themselves stalked by a zombie torture family. But since it's directed by the genius that is Joss Whedon at his creative peak, this film is to horror movies what Kill Bill was to action flicks.

Everyone's favourite singer-songwriter-actor Amanda Seyfried is back for more mayhem in Gone as the survivor of a serial killer who apparently has returned to finish the job. The problem is everyone thinks she's insane and that the serial killer doesn't exist...The film melds the cheesiness of B-grade horror to Hitchcockian thrillers.

Till next week,

Vernon Chan

PICK OF THE WEEK

Delicacy

Under Foenkino's conventional direction, Delicacy comes across as a cutesey quirky meandering romantic comedy. The style of comedy is ironic, relying on the clash between naively sentimental characters and overly cynical characters, and the incongruity between the script's focus on realistic little details of life and the sentimental devices employed liberally in the direction. Paired with this interesting and refreshing brand of comedy is quirky camerawork and editing that relies heavily on the camera capturing Audrey Tatou-s smolderingly hot middle-age charm.
