29 August 2012 #442

As the summer draws to an end, it's your last chance to have a picnic out in the green commons before the skies deliver a season's worth of thunderstorms. Or in the case of Singapore, haze and smog. But if the weather should turn for the worst, we at the Fridae Movie Club have suggestions for you as well.

Our pick of the week is the stop motion animated feature Paranorman. A good-natured parody of old B-grade horror flicks typically hosted by Elvira on midnight television and roasted by the MST3K crew, Paranorman is about a boy who sees ghosts all the time. Born this way yet asked to change who he is, he faces discrimination and bullying from his peers and his family but he'll be the one the town turns to when an ancient witch's curse strikes!

Jon Chu and the cast of the latest season of So You Think You Can Dance put on a show once more in Step Up Revolution. No surprises for guessing the plot but this time round, the dancers must do their routines as part of a flash mob in a bid to make 1 million hits on YouTube and get $1 million — as well as save Miami from being bulldozed for redevelopment.

You've watched a gang of chavs take on an alien invasion in last year's Attack the Block. Now watch American males from a very small town's very small neighbourhood watch take on an alien invasion in The Watch!

Till next week,

Vernon Chan

PICK OF THE WEEK

Paranorman

Lovingly animated, ParaNorman is a technical marvel to behold with its spot-on, personality-filled character designs, while a strong, funny and suspenseful script about the problems of childhood bullying and alienation satisfies with its character development and organic, character-driven humour that pokes fun at the 70s B-movies. The film has gained attention in the US for its almost revolutionary use of an openly gay character in a family film, but what also strikes our reviewer is the way the movie gives symbolic visual cues and hints in the subliminal that another character could very well be homosexual. We'll leave you to find out who it is.
