Jeff Sheng: Don't Ask, Don't Tell (Video)

LA-based photographer Jeff Sheng discusses his recent project "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", art and activism, and how artists like himself can engage in social documentary to "bring to light a voice that nobody else has ever heard before."

Photographer Jeff Sheng discusses his recent project "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" which features photographs of closeted gay service members in the US military with their faces obscured to protect their identity. Fridae had interviewed him last year about the 2010 Asian Pacific Male Calendar, a fundraising project he was involved with to benefit the Asian Pacific Health Care Venture – a non-profit community health center in Los Angeles that provides low cost medicine to the working poor and uninsured.

In the video produced by Ovation TV, a multi-platform network that offers original and acquired programming focused on art, culture and personal creativity, he talks about using photography as a medium to "express issues of diversity and identity. "

"In every social and political movement, artists have been very much at the forefront of creating visible bodies of work to encourage change."
