London, Sydney, San Francisco, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt what do these gay party capitals of the world have in common? Huge crowds in gay clubs and bars... on Sunday nights. They come out, they play, they party... as if it's Friday or Saturday. And they go to work or school the next morning with their pressed shirts, neckties, and three piece suits as if they'd spent their Sunday night watching sitcom reruns and slept way before midnight just like the good boys.
Meanwhile, in KL, Sunday nights resemble any other day of the workweek. Clubs are rarely open unless the next day is a public holiday or if there are special events (like girl parties with the most pathetic turnouts that make most people feel so miserable they cry all the way home).
More often than not, self-proclaimed dancing queens have little choice but to spend the night watching degrading Hollywood (or Bollywood) blockbusters at the cinema and coming out feeling constipated from the 2000-calorie caramel popcorn they unknowingly ingested.
The absence of a Sunday night slot for partying leaves KL clubbers overcompensating on their typical Saturday night splurge. Club hopping from one place to another until closing time, they end up staring blank-eyed into the shallow waters of KLCC's man-made pond at mid-morning amidst curious passers-by, unable to get off their high. God forbid if a Taiwanese tourist armed with a camera stumbles across them.
Why not Sunday nights?
So the question is: Why aren't we partying on Sundays? Clearly, something is not right here. The rest of the world is out there shaking their sweet assets on Sunday nights while KL's gay population walk aimlessly like souls trapped in purgatory.
Who said partying on a Sunday night is blasphemous? Think of it as just going out for night Mass. You have the pastor at the DJ console, the choir on the podiums, and the congregation listening and praising hallelujah to It's Raining Men. Your mother would be so proud.
Commenting on the gay scene in London, an ardent fan of hardcore clubbing who enjoys getting sloshed every day of the week had this to say: "Everyone needs an outlet for clubbing. They all need the time and place to party. No one cares if they have to go to work or school or whatever the next morning."
Another one recounts the Sunday night parties in Edinburgh where "gays, straights and everyone in between bounce to hard house and feel each other up right through Monday morning."
What's even more exciting is the fact that partying on a Sunday means getting to dress down and not giving a damn about the Fendi shoes, Prada bag, and Cartier bracelets you left at home. Just imagine you're J.Lo in Love Don't Cost A Thing.
The keyword here is "minimal"that means wearing as little as you can. In fact, wearing nothing at all would probably get you more attention. And isn't "attention" what every gay boy wants? Of course, if there's an inconsiderate stare, march straight up to them and say "It's Sunday, you idiot!"
There are two groups of people in the world: those who mark "Sunday" as the beginning of the week and those who feel that "Monday" should get the honor. Most Sunday clubbers belong in the latter group. Why? Because Sunday is not a working day. That technically still makes it the weekend. Humans party on weekends. So why not get plastered on Sundays? Get the drift? So drop that feather duster and take that apron off right now, Mister!
For those who are weirdly inclined to go party in the middle of the week, think about this. First of all, mid-week parties are boring and dead, unless you dating the bartender and want to have the place all to yourselves. Secondly, you're still bothered by unfinished business at work. A cute boy makes a serious pass at you and you totally ignore him because you're busy thinking about that report due yesterday you haven't even started on. Unless your pick-up line is "Sorry, I have an early morning meeting tomorrow", it's just a lost cause.
On the other hand, you're a clean slate on Sundays. You have the energy, you don't have to worry about the week ahead just yet, and if you manage to get a big catch, you can always call in sick saying that you caught something really bad over the weekend. Besides, what are sick leaves for if you don't use them? Just make sure your boss doesn't cruise at the same spots you do.
With all this said, let's just face the awful truth: Friday and Saturday nights are so last-week! Think about it... you walk into your regular Friday night spot (since there really is no where else to go), you see the same faces you despise, and you see them doing the same horrifying dance moves to the same music they played last week (and in the same order). The night will probably end with you exclaiming, "Where are the men? I've fucked every single guy in this bar!"
