Having won her fourth Wimbledon crown and 13th major title in easy fashion, Serena’s run of good fortunes came to an abrupt end when she was cut by a broken glass in her right foot in a restaurant shortly after her victory.

After an exhibition in Brussels on July 8 against Clijsters before a world-record tennis crowd of 35,681, the injury sustained by the tennis diva worsened and surgery will be needed.

Initially, Serena will miss three tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open, including events in Istanbul, Cincinnati and Montreal. However, latest from the WTA Tour is that Williams is now questionable for her home Grand Slam event, the US Open, at the end of August.

Serena's return to the Open has been widely anticipated because of her lost in the semifinals last year in infamous fashion, yelling at a line judge at the end of her match against Kim Clijsters and was fined a record US$82,500.

"I am having a tough few days," Williams said on her Twitter account Monday. "My mom and friends have been taking good care of me. I hope to be back on the tour soon. I miss playing."

The top-ranked player has participated in only six tournaments for this season. She was benched for nearly three months after winning the Australian Open in January with a knee injury.

Despite this latest injury setback, the tennis diva is still the favourite in many's opinion to take home the last Grand Slam title of the year. Now will Ms Williams show up?
