Haven't we already had enough horror remakes like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror, The Haunting, The Fog, The Omen, The Wicker Man and The Hills Have Eyes?
Serving as more evidence of Hollywood's creative bankruptcy, this latest is a remake of the 1986 cult horror classic The Hitcher. Now think... it's a 1986 movie. Not the 1960s, not the 1970s, but 1986. Looking at the way things are going, Hollywood might just be remaking Saw and Final Destination by 2020 if not earlier.
The original version of The Hitcher starred pin-up cutie C Thomas Howell as a young man driving alone in the country. He picks up a hitch-hiker played by Rutger Hauer, who turns out to be a homicidal maniac. What made it a creepy classic was the film's final revelation that the killer was actually a psychic creation of the young man's own anxieties.
This new version has a couple (Sophia Bush and Zachary Knighton) on the road instead of a young man. The killer is played by Sean Bean. None of the actors are as good as the original cast, and none of the tangible creepiness of the original has been successfully repeated for this version. In short, this is just boring and stupid.
