Broken English

Director: Zoe Cassavetes

Starring: Parker Posey, Melvil Poupaud, Drea de Matteo

Release: 2007-07-17

For those desperate for some semblance of art amid the sea of B-grade horror and action thrillers, you may find consolation in Broken English. The indie drama is directed by Zoe Cassavetes (daughter of famous indie director John Cassavetes) and stars the queen of indie pictures, the delectable Parker Posey.

Parker plays a single 30-something woman who just can't seem to find a good relationship with a man. She hates the men she dates, her married friend (Drea de Matteo), her overbearing mother (Gena Rowlands). In short, nothing is her personal life seems to be going right. Until she meets an attractive French man (Melvil Poupaud) who is younger than her and seems to be the cure for her jadedness...

Broken English addresses some of the issues that iconic TV show Sex & the City addresses, chiefly, the question of why smart and attractive 30-something New York women are still single. Unfortunately, the TV show has covered so much ground that Broken English feels almost redundant a film that is five years too late to be fresh.

Director Zoe Cassavetes offers some bittersweet insights into the life of a single woman, but if you've seen every season of Sex & the City, you really have seen it all.
