Mirrors

Director: Alexandre Aja

Starring: Kiefer Sutherland, Paula Patton, Cameron Boyce

Release: 2008-09-16

Director Alexandre Aja has developed a reputation for being an above-average horror director. His debut work High Tension (2003) was astoundingly brutal and pleased gorehounds. His subsequent effort, a remake of The Hills Have Eyes (2006) satisfied horror lovers for the same reason.

Unfortunately, his new horror film has neither the nerve nor verve of his previous two. Based on the flawed 2003 Korean film, Mirrors is about a night watchman (Kiefer Sutherland) tasked to guard a shut-down department store that was partially destroyed by fire. The weird thing is that every mirror in the store is in perfect condition.

Little does he know that the mirrors house an evil spirit that can travel from one reflective surface to another, and will stop at nothing in order to harm Kiefer and his loved ones...

Mirrors is almost as dull and tedious as its Korean version, and does director Alexandre no favours. The premise may seem somewhat original, but the plodding storyline will leave most MTV-generation viewers picking their nose in boredom. Hollywood should never have bought the remake rights in the first place.
