lesbian prom king sparks uproar

Small town experiences anxiety after high school lesbian wins prom king title.

The recent crowning of a lesbian as prom king in a small-town high school in northwestern Washington has incited concern in the town and a change in school policy -- future prom kings must be boys and queens girls.

About two weeks ago, Krystal Bennett, a senior student at Ferndale High School was nominated by friends and picked by her fellow students as the prom king.

While David Hutchinson, Principal of Ferndale High, said that most of the students were happy with the results, he felt a lesbian prom king was not the best way to deal with homosexuality in schools. He said he would push for changes in the rules governing who can be nominated for king and queen, according to gay website Rainbow Network.

Bennett, the school's only openly gay student, said she has chosen an activist role -- criticizing the school's annual Peace Week for failing to address discrimination against gays and lobbying to increase the number of books in the school library that deal with homosexuality.

She has also said that she will reconsider staying in her small town of 8,000 due to the negativity she is facing.
