Two women are celebrating becoming one of the first known Lesbian couples in China to begin a family through surrogacy.

Cai gave birth to the twins which were artificially inseminated at a clinic in Portland, Oregon in the US.

The eggs were taken from Wu and inseminated with sperm from a US sperm bank. The pair gave birth at a private hospital in Beijing.

Noting that their situation is pretty rare, Cai and Wu count themselves as lucky to be able to afford treatment abroad.

The pair have also gained the support of their parents, who are helping to look after the two babies.

The birth is being heralded as a milestone for LGBT in a country where there is no discrimination protection, no same-sex marriage and no access reproductive services such as surrogacy to LGBT families.

Cai and Wu may face obstacles further down the road, when they try to register their children for school or government ID cards.

The pair have a few words of advice for would be LGBT parents in the country. "You've got to believe that you will make your dream come true, like making a baby," says Cai.

"You have to be very confident about your partnership," she adds. "Although you're a lesbian couple, it should be as strong as the other couples."
