Malaysia will not recognise same-sex marriage, the country’s prime minister has reiterated. Dr Mahathir Mohamad dismissed same-sex marriage as a ‘regressive way of thinking’ and argued there is no ‘absolute right’ which would allow for marriage equality. Mahathir made the comments while speaking at Cambridge Union in the UK on Sunday (16 June). LGBT rights activists in Malaysia have called out the government for not doing enough to protect the country’s LGBT community. In recent years, Malaysia has seen an uptick in anti-LGBT sentiments.
