The Nancy Drew book series is one of the most popular reads for girls in the world. Since the first mystery involving the girl detective was published in 1930, there have been approximately 175 titles to her name. So it was only a matter of time before Hollywood decided to make a Nancy Drew movie.

Unfortunately, the film may have come 30 years too late...

Nancy Drew (played by Emma Roberts, daughter of actor Eric Roberts and niece of superstar Julia Roberts) is a teenage girl who has to accompany her father (Tate Donovan) on a business trip in Los Angeles. They get to stay at a large mansion that was once the home of a movie star (Laura Harring) who was murdered. Naturally, Nancy the teen detective simply cannot resist investigating a good mystery — especially when the clues she needs can be found right under her nose...

The trouble with Nancy is that she seems so out of place in this day and age. Even though the story takes place in the present, our Nancy wears sweaters and loafers, is remarkably courteous and sweet, and doesn't even have a cellphone. In school, the other girls make fun of her traditional goody-two-shoes ways, but Nancy doesn't seem to care. She happily loves all things clean, neat and vintage.

While older audiences (the moms and pops) may love Nancy for being old-fashioned and traditional, teenage audiences will probably think of her as a geek. And whereas Nancy once inspired awe and respect from young girls for exhibiting a brave and independent feminist streak, the young girls of today will only deride her character in the movie for being "soooo out of it".

Compared to the strong girl characters you can find on TV these days, like Buffy, Angel and Veronica Mars, Nancy Drew just seems like a flake sometimes.
