Mika Goes Out

Arjan: Mika continues to surprise me. He is featured in the upcoming issue of Out and according to reports he stays mum about his sexuality.

It is one thing not wanting to discuss your sexuality (which I completely respect), but teasing your gay fans with it takes it to a whole new level.

Mika appears to go to great lengths to continue to feed the rumors and innuendo about whether he is straight, gay or bisexual. He does not have the critics and bloggers do the work for him. Instead, he does it himself by going on the cover of Out and keeping it vague in the accompanying interview.

This cover Out was carefully timed. I know first-hand that his PR team refused interview requests from gay publications prior and around the time of the release of his album in the U.S. because it would potentially mark the singer as a gay artist, which could hurt his mainstream appeal. The interview I did with him back in December slipped through the cracks of his handlers.

I wonder how his gay fans will respond to this latest move by Mika. Will it gain the respect of the gay community or will it turn into a backlash? The latter would be really unfortunately, simply because he is such fresh voice in pop music.

Although he has two songs in the Uk billboard TOP 40, but to be honest, i dont feel any connection there. So whether he will get luckier or otherwise by posting himself on the cover of out, i really dont care much. but anyway, he is pretty. so maybe i hope he is gay inside.

His songs are good, but he doesn't has the star power. I don't really care whether he's straight or gay. He's an artist, but not a celebrity.

Gay or Straight who cares. His album Life In Cartoon Motion is absolutly brilliant. It is so fresh and diveres. Unfortunatly seeing him on television he does not seem able to perform his songs live very well at all, not being able to reach the notes and his voice breaking up towards the end of a song. His style of singing has to be studio enhanced to get the best results. Having said that the album is my best buy of the year.

yeah- i *heart* Mika!
Got almost all songs on his album in my head by now lol- i esp love Grace Kelly. i do agree with gezza though, that his live performances unfortuntely leaves more to to be desired lol. still, he's a new artist so gotta give him some time to 'grow'...but he's definately very promising ;)
