Lucky Soul got its start in 2002 in Liverpool when guitarist and songwriter Andrew Laidlawe and drummer Nathaniel Perkins bonded over their love for the great Northern Soul of the '60s and decided to start writing some songs together. A couple of years later guitarist Ivor Sims was added together with bassist Toby Fogell. Keyboard player Malcolm Young followed together with singer Ali Howard, the blond, shining beacon of Lucky Soul.
Laidlawe describes Lucky Soul's music very eloquently. "Beautiful and self-effacing, bittersweet. Like romance, it seems superficial but runs deep. It doesn't try to be clever. Your guts aren't clever."
Earlier this year, the group independently released their debut album "The Great Unwanted." The disc is gaining momentum overseas, and especially in Japan where the record is distributed in HMV stores. Now that artists like Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson and even The Pipettes have kickstarted the '60s pop throwback movement, Lucky Soul might very well get their own slice of pie. Feast on this this.
