The Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival has announced the nominees for the first Outfest Screen Idols award, honoring performances in gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender roles.

Nominated for the best female performance are Ellen DeGeneres, Chloe Sevigny and Vanessa Redgrave (If These Walls Could Talk 2), Julianna Margulies (What's Cooking?) and Maria Schrader (Aimee & Jaguar).

For the best male performance, the nominees are Javier Bardem and Johnny Depp (Before Night Falls), Robert Downey Jr. (Wonder Boys), Dan Futterman (Urbania) and Stuart Wells (Billy Elliot).

Members of the public can vote for their favourite actor or actress through the Outfest website. Winners will be announced on April 20.

The annual festival will run from July 12-13 and filmmakers will have until the end of March to submit narrative and documentary features and short films that are about and/or of interest to lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people.
