It's April in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of love. Especially in certain nightspots in the Muang district, where a combination of ecstasy, methamphetamine and an unnamed "sexual arousal drug" have been pumped through the ventilation systems, police told the Bangkok Post.
The purpose of this inhalable cocktail, apparently, is to encourage patrons to have sex with prostitutes.
This is just one aspect of the changing drug problem police face in the northern region of Thailand. In addition to this aerosolized drug, there is concern about other drugs, mixed within the glue on the backs of stickers that are absorbed through the skin.
In the wake of a (heterosexual) sex scandal - a prominent senator has been accused of paying for sex with four underage girls - the media has turned a spotlight on the issue of underage prostitution.
The Post reports that, in Chang Mai, about 1,000 students sell sex in order to buy drugs and expensive consumer goods.
The article in the Post leaves open several important questions. Would the drugs the police mentioned have any effect if inhaled in small quantities? Given that most stories about aphrodisiacs turn out to be myths, what is this "sexual arousal drug?" Would it be efficacious when inhaled?
If so, how would one get it into one's air conditioner, and where can one get a prescription for it, if one wanted to use it privately, in support of a good cause? Sadly, these are issues the Post left unexplored.
