Britney wanted to make this album "nastier and funkier" [she told MTV in an interview], so she goes all the way in putting a swear word in Overprotected.
Okay, I'll probably need to give her more credit. At least this self-titled third album is a welcomed departure from her hit-me-baby-one-more-time-I-don't-have-my-hall-pass days. I swear if I see another drag queen perform that song I'll shoot someone. That song is so "last week" honey.
While we're on the topic, my drag queen friend enlightened me on the fact that Britney has finally produced the "semi-drag" anthem most of us have been waiting for: "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman."
By the way, "semi-drag" is a word my circle of friends use to describe someone who is in training to become a full-fledged dragster. You know the type: those who are too feminine to be a guy but still too masculine to be a woman. Or it could also be used for drag queens still contemplating about snipping it off for good. Either way, this song may help them make the best out of their "transition" period. Hey, I'm not kidding here; I speak only the truth.
The first single, I'm A Slave 4 U (she says "hell" on this one), relies heavily on Janet Jackson-like vocal styles and Prince-influenced music. Suffice to say, most of the album doesn't sound like the Britney we all love (or rather, love to hate), although the Max Martin formulas are still evident in tracks like Bombastic Love (don't ask me how that title came up) and Cinderella.
It might come close to being narcissistic at times, but of course we don't know what it's like to be Britney.
