girls go wild in kl

To those who think that 'girl power' came and went with the Spice Girls, a night in Kuala Lumpur on March 9 would have undoubtedly proved the skeptics wrong. Fridae's KL writer, Sue Anne Teo checks out the party.

Judging from the phenomenal response to the recent party organised by Singapore's Club Herstory and Malaysia's forplu.com; girl power, women power, butch or femme power is indeed still very much alive and kicking.

Although the night came off to a slow start, probably due to most of the early attendees feeling disorientated inside the beautiful colonial bungalow dating back to 1919.

For one night only, the tables and chairs at My Place, which is usually a restaurant, were all removed to make way for a makeshift stage and dance area complete with disco lights and speakers.

When the crowd steadily increased by 11pm, the air of anticipation was unmistakable. To date, this is most probably the biggest turnout from the women community in KL who are rather selective when it comes to such events.

Club Herstory was the undeniable highlight of the night, sending the crowd into a momentary frenzy when they appeared. Some rather observant sisters instantly recognised the dancers as being former contestants of the Butch Hunt competition in Singapore. The rest just yelled at the top of their lungs with some rather suggestive connotations towards the cute butches.

However, despite the eye-candy and some very impressive dance moves, the crowd were slow to respond, choosing instead to stand rooted to the ground and refusing to groove to the beat. Some persuasion was necessary and this was seen in the form of Juelie's emceeing skills that managed to break the ice with the girls. Being one of the founders of forplu.com, Juelie is no stranger to the scene, having organised many such parties for the women's community.

Next up was a mini dance competition that saw some pretty keen participation. The limited stage space did not stop those gyrating moves from being showcased. Winners were presented with prizes and the night progressed to a different beat thereafter with the music resuming and the fun heightening!
Songs were in fact chosen by the girls themselves making it unquestionably their night. Towards midnight, everyone was down on the dance floor and even those who weren't, were dancing on the staircases and other pockets of available space.

Jam-packed to the brim, some girls resorted to having to spend the night upstairs at Unclub while others chose to occupy the already crowded garden area right outside the entrance.

The next few performances by Club Herstory sealed the deal for those looking for a great night out. Brilliantly choreographed around the small stage area, it was probably the close proximity with the audience that sent the wild night going wilder!

If the cuties from Club Herstory themselves did not send pulses racing, then it was probably their sexy moves and megawatt smiles that connected with the crowd.

By this time, the thumping and stamping from the dancing reached an unmistakable climax that was felt throughout the 83 year-old building. These girls sure know how to have fun!

As the night progressed, the music continued to be brilliant for the occasion thanks to Princess DJ Ann who kept the crowd entertained.

For everyone who turned up, this was one night to remember. And for the Singaporeans who came up exclusively for the event, the disappointment level was probably on the negative scale, if at all present.

As for the rather shy and more reserved KL girls, this was surely an unforgettable night of pure enjoyment. Having taken the crowd a while to warm up in the beginning, the ending was a much more pleasant one, having being promised that more of such events will grace KL stages in future.
