The Mandarin double bill of Mergers and Wills and Wills And Secession which was translated by Han Yong Hong and directed by Toy Factory's Chief Artistic Director Goh Boon Teck and Associate Artistic Director Nelson Chia respectively; and will star Leanne Ong DeLiang, Karen Tan, Jeffrey Low, Tang Wan Chin and Serene Chen.
Mergers and Wills is the story of a lesbian lawyer - Ellen Toh. How she defends herself against accusations of life's cruelty, career obstacles and sexual orientation. Ellen challenged against her own will and accepted marriage. Only she realised that it could be the toughest deal of her life. The pains she caused to her loved ones were merely because of her protection towards them.
The marriage has fastened her life but not her endless desires. Her intelligence has become stupidity, her strength has turned into weakness, and decisiveness has derived into contradiction. Mergers and Wills is about Ellen's confrontation of life to husband, daughter, parents, sister and friends.
Synopsis:
Mergers And Accusations
Boy meets girl. Boy loves girl. Boy marries girlthe catch? Girl loves girls too, the more the merrier. Welcome to marriage in the 21st century. Meet Ellen Toh, the witty, tough-as-a-nut lesbian lawyer, and the only man she will ever love - Jon, the husband who accepts her sexual orientation, and still gives her a hot meal every night. What could be the best social arrangement ever starts to crack when Ellen falls for Lesley, the woman she has looked for all her life. And now Ellen must choose between obligation and desire, between convention and happiness, between friendship and love.
Wills And Secession
To have and to hold - Ellen faces the biggest commitment she will ever know. She begins a new life, away from the old, moving onwards with no past. Until another woman threatens to destroy everything that Ellen has struggled to create for herself, a woman just as headstrong, determined and loving, a woman almost like herself - her sister. As Ellen is forced to remember pain, and as she encounters illness and decay, the words will continue to haunt and comfort her: to have and to hold, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do us part. Blest be the ties that bind.
