The Family School Sexual Orientation Discrimination Ordinance Concern Group has conducted research that claims that 70 percent of Hong Kongers believe homophobic attitudes should be accepted, whilst more than half believe equality should not be taught in schools.
The Family School Sexual Orientation Discrimination Ordinance Concern Group hopes to use the research to discern the the Equal Opportunities Commission from suggesting enacting legislation that would protect LGBT people against discrimination.
At present, the city has no law against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. Gay rights activists have retorted that the survey is evidence of why laws are needed to protect LGBT from discrimination.
The survey was conducted by Polytechnic University researchers in November last year and 611 adults were questioned.
68 per cent of those surveyed agreed that society should tolerate homophobic attitudes, and 57 per cent disagreed with the idea that schools should teach that "both homosexual and heterosexual love are beautiful". 49 per cent disagreed that the government should recognize formal same-sex relationships in the same way as heterosexuals.
Roger Wong Wai-ming, the head of the family school group, said the government and the EOC should not "deprive" people of their "freedom of speech" by passing laws to protect gay rights, according to the South China Morning Post.

I have always wondered why a truly hetero person would care that others are wired differently. What difference does it make to them, unless it is one of their kids. And in that case everyone would be better served if society was unconcerned about individuals' sexual orientation.
Our goal is to achieve that state of unconcern. The US is rapidly gaining on that goal, much to the surprise of some of us from the older generation. The fact is, the haters have no logical argument to support their position. Eventually even ignorant people, people who have unquestioningly accepted bias based on sexual orientation, will see that. And then things will change. But, as activists have been saying for many years, the best way we can achieve this is to come out of the closet and show the rest of society that we are perfectly normal people, and that there are so many of us that we cannot be viewed as oddities.
