Malaysian religious body castigates gay people on Valentine’s Day

The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) began distributing a flyer entitled “10 myths about homosexuality” saying gay people were more likely to contract STIs, suffer mental illness, indulge in substance abuse.

Malaysia’s premier directorate for Islamic affairs has chosen Valentine’s Day to launch an anti-gay media offensive in the Muslim-majority country by distributing fliers saying that gay people were more likely to contract sexually transmitted diseases, suffer mental illness and indulge in substance abuse.

The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) began distributing the flyer entitled “10 myths about homosexuality” which the Malay Mail Online said bore Jakim’s logo and was reinforced with a Qur’anic verse on illicit sex and evil. “The flyer did not state the source of its facts or the researches that back their assertions,” it said.

Jakim not only streamlines the enforcement of Islamic law in the country but also acts as the main agency to legislate Islamic law for Malaysia.

The flyer that is being circulated online said Jakim believes no one was born gay and that those who prevented gay people from becoming straight were committing an “ethical violation.”

Gay people were more likely than straight people to contract sexually transmitted diseases, suffer mental illness, indulge in substance abuse and subject partners to domestic violence.

“Homosexuals are less likely to enter into a committed relationship, less likely to be sexually faithful to a partner, even if they have one, and are less likely to remain committed for a lifetime, compared to heterosexuals,” the flier said.

“The contents of Jakim’s pamphlet is very similar to that issued by the Family Research Council, an American conservative Christian lobby group that is against gay rights, abortion, divorce, embryonic stem-cell research and pornography,” according to freemalaysiatoday.com.

Malaysia retains “Section 377A” a British colonial-era law banning “carnal intercourse against the order of nature” and outlaws same-sex relations and can be jailed for up to 20 years, caned or fined.

The government’s attitude toward the LGBT community is shaped by Islam, the official religion in Malaysia. Muslims make up over 60 percent of Malaysia’s of 29 million people.

Many Muslim groups such as Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) as well as the government have attacked the LGBT community and groups as being “un-Islamic.”

Well let me be the first to say: JAKIM and ISMA and the rest of the sharia loving Islamic state of Malaysia can shove it.

I guess I won't be visiting Malaysia anymore. It is clear, when looking at countries like Malaysia, why separation of religion and government is so important.

They (the authorities) never fail to self-proclaimed what seems to be as though they speak and act wholly and truly on behalf of God, without universal consensus, naive, ignorant of others, arrogant - these are vices that ruins our societies irregardless of religious beliefs, traditions. They forgot God will also judge them for their deeds and after life punishment to be spoken upon them when armageddon arrives and strike upon us and mother nature.

Like all convincing lies, some of what the pamphlet says is true. HIV is much more prevalent amongst gays than the heterosexual population and we are more likely to suffer from depression and more likely to commit suicide. But mired in that are the lies. That we aren't born with it, or that we can change it.

If our government realised the simple fact that we didn't choose to be gay, they'd realise that STIs and mental illness are plights afflicting us that need addressing.

HIV and many other STIs are rampant among the str8 communities of subSaharan Africa where condom use by str8s is negligible and rape is normal
