Watch: Indian Documentaries, I am: Homosexuality in India (Being gay in India)

Homophobia is prevalent in India. Public discussion of homosexuality in India has been inhibited by the fact that sexuality in any form is taboo and rarely discussed openly.

In recent years, however, attitudes towards homosexuality have shifted slightly. In particular, there have been more depictions and discussions of homosexuality in the Indian news media and in Bollywood.

Several organisations, including the Naz Foundation (India) Trust, the National AIDS Control Organisation, Law Commission of India, Union Health Ministry, National Human Rights Commission of India and the Planning Commission of India have expressed support for decriminalizing homosexuality in India, and pushed for tolerance and social equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. India is among countries with a social element of a third gender. But mental, physical, emotional and economic violence against LGBT community in India prevails.

Yes, India really needs more general understanding and education regarding same sex relationships. It was a joy when holidaying in Goa and Kerala in February to see young men walking one with arm around the other or hand in hand often. But this is a sign of good friendship rather than declaration of being gay. It would be good it they kissed occasionally too . . .
I went to a Hindu / Christian ashram but didn't find any teaching of same sex relationships in the Hindu tradition. There are many Chrisitans in Kerala and although Christianity has opposed same sex relations, Jesus never condemned it, but focused on loving care for the other.
I hope India can become more broadminded about relationships and discover there need not be guilt with homosexuality, but enjoy EQUALITY !
