The 32-year old man filed the lawsuit against a psychiatric hospital in Henan province for forced confinement
A case against a psychiatric hospital performing a ‘gay cure’ on a man in Zhumadian in Henan province was due to be heard Wednesday but has been delayed due to lack of critical evidence.
The man, who goes by the pseudonym Yu Hu, was forcibly taken to the hospital by his family after he tried to divorce his wife in October last year. He was only released after 19 days when his boyfriend and a local NGO contacted police.
“I was tied by my wife, parents and brother, who pushed me into a vehicle and took me to the psychiatric hospital, the Second People’s Hospital of Zhumadian,” Yu was quoted as saying in the Beijing Times.
Yu’s lawyer, Huang Rui, said that if they could retrieve police records stating Yu was being treated against his will then the court would hear the case.
“I repeatedly explained to them that I did not have a mental disease but no one would listen,” Yu told the Beijing Times, adding that he would never forget “the pain and humiliation” he went through in the hospital.
Yu Hu has not dared go back to his hometown to divorce his wife since the incident.
