Transgender people are mistreated, including by their families, according to a survey conducted by the Guangzhou-based Trans Center and printed in the Global Times.
The survey, which asked 113 transgender respondents from 21 provinces, municipalities and cities in China, found 83 percent of transgender individuals were abused by family members.
Ninety percent of the transgender people were threatened, insulted, or received therapy to cure them.
Eighty-three of those surveyed were abused by parents, grandparents, uncles and siblings, the survey shows.
The survey found about one percent of respondents were forced to have sex with others.
