Chiba becomes first Japanese city to issue certificates for same-sex couples

With many positive developments in support of same-sex marriage in Japan, the city of Chiba today issued its first certificates to same-sex couples recognizing their relationships. This is a first in Japan and comes on the back of the news that 13 same-sex couples will sue the Japanese Government over the lack of marriage Equality.

 

Whilst he certificates are not the equivalent of marriage for opposite-sex couples, they will give same-sex couples increased rights. These rights include applying for public housing and the ability to visit their partner in hospital if they’re seriously ill.
