As the Russian invasion continues, queer people are particularly at risk.
The images emerging from Ukraine are horrific - our thoughts are with the people who live there, caught up in a geo-political power-play as Russia violently invades the country.
It's obviously an incredibly dangerous time for everyone in Ukraine. Particularly vulnerable are LGBTQ people.
While some progress on LGBTQ equality had been made in recent years, the queer community in Ukraine has been struggling against systemic homophobia. However, with the Russian invasion, there's not only a fear that any progress on equality could be rolled back, but there have been specific threats that LGBTQ people will be targeted by Russian authorities.
One of the leading voices for Ukraine's LGBTQ community is the Kyiv Pride organisation. Posting on social media, they are continuing to be defiant against Russian aggression, and are urging queer people to remain calm and stay strong.
The Kyiv Pride organisation has appealed to LGBTQ people around the world to call on their governments to take action against Russia and end the invasion of Ukraine.
“We need to stop it now, we need to show how powerful we are all together, and Putin will stand no chance…” posted the organisation on its social media channels.
