Foreign diplomatic missions have for the first time participated in the annual Korea Queer Cultural Festival to demonstrate support that their countries have for the LGBT community in South Korea.
Gay South Korean film director Kim Jho Gwang-soo and his partner Kim Seung-hwan symbolically married in public ceremony in central Seoul on Saturday although same-sex marriage is not legally recognised in Korea.
The Korea Queer Culture Festival celebrated its 10th anniversary over the weekend with its largest-ever march through downtown Seoul. But as South Korea’s LGBT activists celebrate over a decade of queer community organising, funding cuts and a hostile political environment threaten its future. Matt Kelley reports from Seoul.
