A lesbian couple died when their plane crashed off the coast of Iceland on Tuesday. The two women were both accomplished pilots who were heading to London for the start of the Sydney Air Race 2001, reported The Boston Globe.
58-year-old Gwen Bloomingdale and 52-year-old Barbara Gard were flying their twin-engine plane to London for the start of a five-month trip from London to Australia when the plane crashed. The race, which starts on Sunday covers a course with 28 stops along the way.
Iceland Coast Guard officials said the plane was flying at 15,000 feet, a high altitude for an unpressurized plane, when it disappeared from radar Tuesday morning, Iceland time. The couple's bodies were pulled from the water five hours later.
