Conservative Chinese Campaign Against Same-sex Marriage in Australia

Reports suggest Chinese in Australia are uncharacteristically engaging in the nation's politics, with older Chinese especially campaigning for a 'no' vote in marriage poll.

Reaction to Australia's controversial ballot on marriage equality among the Chinese community in the country has been overwhelmingly strong, and polarized, according to the Global Times.

Advertisements, leaflets, and online campaigning against gay marriage in Chinese have been rising following the Australian government's launch of a national survey on same-sex marriage, which began collecting votes on September 12.

The survey only has one question: "Should Australian law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry," with only two options: "Yes" or "No."

The Global Times reports leaflets handed out at University campuses including one colorful flyer with a large cartoon drawing of two men kissing, with  "Homosexuality is a deadly curse declared by God" in Chinese at the top.

On Chinese social media network, We Chat, a message widely shared read: "Emergency, please share this with others! The fate of Australia and our next generation is in your hands! Vote against legalizing same-sex marriage because it's a death spell that will leave you sonless, and the origin that creates and spreads AIDS."

A Chinese Presbyterian church in Australia also hosted a sermon specifically on the matter.

A Sydney-based Chinese paediatrician and founder of Australian Chinese for Families Association named Pansy Lai has appeared in a video advertisement paid for by Coalition for Marriage as one of three concerned mothers calling on people to vote no in the survey, leading to a petition calling for her medical license to be revoked.

The Global Times reports that although younger generations of Chinese in Australia may not sure their views of older members of the community, they are not often in a position to defy their parents or elders.

Do they honestly believe that Gay marriage will result in more gay people!

Wow! I thought Australian citizens were more open in their understanding of the LGBT community. Maybe it is just the older Chinese that aren't living in the 21st century. Hopefully, this negative behavior will subside and common sense will take over. I wish the best for Australia!

A Chinese Presbyterian church is involved, according to the article. A cartoon says "Homosexuality is a deadly curse declared by God". It seems that Christian fundamentalists are behind it, once again.

I agree with Drelin above. It's more about Christian fundamentalists than it is about Chinese. There are Caucasian Christian fundamentalists doing exactly the same & worse in the name of their religion. The fact that they are Chinese is almost irrelevant and should be the byline not the headline! Never underestimate the power of Christian fundamentalists. Here in HK they have stalled the equal rights of LGBTQ people for years!

Shame! They are never so interested and active in other social issues but so active in against gay marriage! If they hate gay marriage so much, why don't they go back to China, where most people hate gays?

That's fucked up. There are so many stupid problems everywhere.

Perhaps there are religion reasons behind it, but I myself don't think so. Because only Chinese do such campaign, why no other races? And in fact most Chinese do not have religion beliefs. They are doing it only because they fear their own children are involved in gay marriages! For older Chinese, the most important thing in life is to have their own offsprings. How could they accept gay marriage? How could they imagine their children choose gay marriage? That means the end to their life stream, a catastrophe! That's it.

Religions foment intolerance, even the most benign religions. Christians often carry on about how persecuted they have been ( even tho it's been a couple of thousand years since they suffered any real persecution except by other religious nuts ). I have always wondered at the strange fact that people who consider their group to be persecuted can't wait to persecute another group. Israelis (Jews ) persecute Palestinians ( Muslims ), for example. There is no good reason to be intolerant toward people who are doing no harm. These groups who make religious - or cultural - arguments in favor of prejudice should consider how they would react if they were the ones suffering exclusionary policies.
