Thailand's justice ministry is drafting a bill to legalize same sex marriage, The Nation reported Thursday, saying that cabinet will consider the bill early next month.
"The department aims to have this draft law promulgated within the term of this present government," a source in the ministry's Rights and Liberties Protection Department (RLPD) told The Nation.
LGBT equality groups in Thailand have been petitioning parliament for law to recognize same sex unions since 2012, when they worked with the RLPD to draft a "life partnership registration" bill.
Its move through parliament was disrupted by the 2014 military coup.
Thailand introduced a Gender Equality Act in 2015 to protect from discrimination based on sexuality and gender.
