The Nun

Original Title: La Monja

Director: Luis De La Madrid

Language: Spanish with English subtitles

Starring: Belen Blanco, Oriana Bonet, Anita Briem

Screening: 2006-05-30

Since the smash success of The Passion of The Christ, other films
like The Da Vinci Code and the upcoming The Omen have tried to capitalize
on the popularity of Christianity-themed films. The Nun, however,
is a step in the wrong direction - if it's a step at all.

This mediocre horror film tells the story of a group of convent
schoolgirls who are sick of being humiliated by their strict nun,
so they get together and murder her. Many years later, the ghost
of the evil nun returns, traveling through water to seek revenge.
It is now up to the young and lovely Anita Briem, the daughter of
one of the ex-convent girls, to end the mayhem and lay the nun's
spirit to rest.

Now if you've seen the trailers for this film, you might have noticed
how suspiciously clumsy and unconvincing the entire film seems to
look. You would be right in your suspicions. The Nun is a forgettable
film with mechanical acting, B-grade special effects and predictable
plot twists.

If you really want to watch a Christian-based horror film, wait
for The Omen to open next week. Better still, read the Bible. Plenty
of horror stories there about what'll happen to bad Christians on
Judgment Day...
