The Forbidden Kingdom

Director: Rob Minkoff

Starring: Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Liu Yifei, Li Bingbing

Release: 2008-04-15

The first film to team up kungfu gods Jackie Chan and Jet Li is a fluffy fantasy-adventure that is fun while you're watching it, but fairly forgettable once you get off your seat.

Boyish-looking 20-year-old actor Michael Angarano
plays a teenager who gets his kicks from watching bootleg DVDs of forgotten kungfu movies. One day, while hanging out in a Chinatown store, he is attacked by neighbourhood bullies who chase him up to the rooftop.

Just before he falls off the edge, he is magically transported to an ancient Chinese kingdom where he befriends a drunken martial arts master (Jackie Chan) and later, a silent monk (Jet Li). They give Michael gets a crash course in martial arts to help him defeat the bad guys, and eventually, find his way home.

With handsome cinematography by Peter Pau and fine action choreography by Yuen Wo-Ping (both Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon alumni), The Forbidden Kingdom will not disappoint fans of Jackie and Jet looking to see the two men in action. Unfortunately, director Rob Minkoff is best known for helming kids' shows like Stuart Little and The Lion King, so the tone of the film is predictably juvenile.

No reason not to dislike it... but no reason to recommend it highly either.
