Director: Robert Luketic

Starring: Jim Sturgess, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey

Release: 2008-06-24

Gay Australian director Robert Luketic made it big in 2001 with Legally Blonde. He then went on to direct other women's comedies like Monster-In-Law and Win a Date With Tad Hamilton. 21 is his first male drama featuring a male character in the lead, and we have to say, we prefer his chick flicks.

Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe) plays a pre-med student desperately looking for the money to pay for his college tuition fees. He is introduced to a group of brilliant Maths students who frequently go to Vegas together and cheat at poker to win big money. The group is led by one brilliant teacher (gay actor Kevin Spacey) who gets a hefty 50 per cent of their takings. Everything is hunky-dory until Jim starts to get cocky

To be frank, there is nothing in the story that we haven't seen before. Except for the fancy "variable change" mathematical theory at the start of the show, the rest of the film follows a familiar trajectory of good boy who becomes seduced by the high life and promptly goes bad. Even the ending is a complete cop-out.

Gorgeous Kate Bosworth plays Jim's love interest, so at least there's eye candy for the girls. For the boys, there's almost nothing here.
