The song presents a grand sonic landscape with its sweeping, airy synths, Flowers' fragile vocals and his lyrics about two young lovers and their "forbidden love."
In interviews, Flowers states that "Tidal Wave" is inspired by David
Bowie's "Drive-In Saturday" and Roy Orbison's "I Drove All Night." I've always thought that Flowers' vocals resemble Obinson's and it is very noteable on this track. The sonics of "Tidal Wave" also remind me of the Pet Shop Boys and even a little bit of a-ha. (While on the topic of a-ha, Killers fans must check out this old video of Brandon Flowers. Wait until it hits the 0:55 second mark.)
Regardless of all the comparisons and inspirations, "Tidal Wave" is just a gorgeous pop ballad with Mr. Flowers giving it his all. And just that makes me weak in the knees.
