Liu Ling Ling is a celebrated artist in Singapore and is especially well known in the local 'getai' scene. She has been in the entertainment industry for over 30 years and is a beloved singer, actress and comedian.

Ling Ling decided to be a Pink Dot ambassador this year because she believes she can reach out to a different segment of our society—those from the older generation who may be struggling with understanding their LGBT children, family members or friends.

Why did you want to become an ambassador for Pink Dot 2016?

I am a mother myself, and I want my son to grow up in a loving and inclusive society. After learning about Pink Dot, I see how I can help educate the older generation of Singaporeans, especially parents with LGBT children, on the importance of being open to new perspectives.accepting them.

What are you most looking forward to on the day?

I am most looking forward to seeing all the people who support Pink Dot and to hear their stories as well. I think this is a great opportunity for people to hear a different perspective and to also be heard.

What has been your experience of the LGBT community in Singapore?

In the entertainment industry, there are many talented LGBT individuals. I have seen these individuals get picked on solely based on the fact that they are LGBT, and that is not okay. If you are bullied, would you not want to receive help/support from somebody? It is really about putting yourself in another person's shoes and thinking about this from their perspective.

What do you think straight 'allies' can do to promote acceptance and equal rights?

I think we should start thinking about the message/legacy we want to leave behind for the younger generation. We should live our lives in a way that emulates the values we want to pass down to our children.

How do you think the LGBT landscape will have changed in Singapore and Asia in the next ten years?

I believe we can move towards being more accepting and understanding. Looking at the number of people who turn up in support of Pink Dot, I can see that things are already changing for the better.

What would you say to encourage people do more for the LGBT movement in Singapore?

Start reaching out to your LGBT friends and relatives. Learn more about them and you will see that everyone is essentially the same. Find ways, however big or small, to show your support for them.
