Fred Claus

Director: David Dobkin

Starring: Vince Vaughn, Paul Giamatti, Miranda Richardson, Elizabeth Banks, John Michael Higgins, Rachel Weisz, Kathy Bates, Kevin Spacey

Release: 2007-11-27

Fred Claus is supposed to be the comedy for the Christmas season. But it isn't. The jokes are stale and the gags are awkward. You're supposed to feel joyful and merry, but instead you feel bored and cheerless.

The premise appears promising at first. Fred Claus (Vince Vaughn) is the brother of Santa Claus (Paul Giamatti). But unlike Santa, Fred is greedy, insecure and dishonest. So when Fred lands up in jail, who else does his call but his kind and generous brother to help him get out?

Santa asks Fred to come with him to the North Pole and help out at the factory where Christmas toys are made. But Santa soon finds out that he may have made a mistake inviting his brother there...

Like we said earlier, the premise isn't half bad. But the devil is always in the execution. And the jokes, gags and pratfalls are just aren't funny or original enough to keep us entertained. However, if you're starved for Christmas entertainment, then go watch this anyway. It isn't Elf, but it isn't Hitman either.
