Police have arrested a man in connection with the brutal double murder of the former head of the Fiji Red Cross John Scott and his lover, Gregory Scrivner, reports the Fiji Daily Post.
The unemployed 23-year-old who has admitted to killing the couple appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court on Monday on murder charges. The revelation has opened up speculation of a sex scam.
Scott, 53, had been investigated once in connection with pornographic photographs related to a paedophilia case.
Police believe Apete Bauleka Vakananumi Kaisau had an intense hatred for the couple and could have killed them because of "the way they exploited, not only him but other youths to fulfil their desires."
The Police Commissioner, Isikia Savua said the suspect has known the murdered couple since high school.
A spokesman from the Director of Public Prosecutions office said that the case would be adjourned for a two weeks. Kaisau will only be able to give his plea after he undergoes a psychiatric evaluation.
Kaisau has declined to be represented by a lawyer.
Mr Savua said the murders were more likely to have a sexual connection than political, amid speculation that they were related to last year's coup attempt by failed businessman George Speight. However, Scott was not on the list of witnesses to testify in Speight's treason trial.
Police investigations will continue to investigate the case.
