The (UK) Times reported:
Ruby Thomas and Rachel Burke, both 18, stamped on Ian Baynham’s chest and kicked him in the head after their friend Joel Alexander, 19, had punched him to the ground, knocking him unconscious, the Old Bailey was told.
As Mr Baynham lay bleeding the teenagers continued to assault him, it was said, causing him to suffer a fit from brain damage after his skull had been fractured.
When Mr Baynham’s friend stepped in to try to save him, Ms Burke attacked him too, punching him in the face, the jury was told.
The three alleged killers fled from the scene and Mr Baynham was taken to hospital in East London, but he never regained consciousness and died 18 days after the attack in September last year.

RIP Ian!

What I'd like to know is where were the police during all the time that these girls and their hefty male friend were harassing various people in Trafalgar Square, which was going on for some time before this attack. The place is also monitored by CCTV. If they'd been arrested earlier for disorderly conduct, this guy would still be alive.
How sad that brutal gay bashings occur and that some people can demolish another without concern or consience for the obvious wrongness of their actions. Usually because they believe from what they have heard (or need to hear) that gay people are less than human. Where do they hear this? That's where the greater evil is perpetrated.
Even the Pope said gay people must expect to be bashed for what we do - and he apparently represents the highest spiritual values of his church.
Although the results may already seem expected, given the great reach of homophobic religious & peer conditioning, it may give a deeper insight as to where this trend is heading in future and how the LGBT can take measures to prevent, if not, minimize similar tragedies again. Greater penalties must also be enacted in line with the gravity of abuse intended.
Sadly, uNiquely Singapore, as usual, cannot be used as a comparison for international justice as it is constantly in contempt of its own credibility through some of its laws in paradox, vis a viz, S377A.
I'll tear them apart to pieces, literally.
Some of the detail coming out of the trial is surreal, one of the girls getting blood all over her...ballet shoes. A witness said the attack was like one in "A Clockwork Orange" but I think even Stanley Kubrick couldn't have dreamed up that scene.
@4, well there are initiatives to educate children and tackle homophobic bullying in schools. Some faith schools are not keen on this as they want to be free to teach that gays are sinful.
very sad indeed.
Oh well - there're a lot of weird people out there, not just those girls in Trafalgar Square. And it's unfortunate that there are people out there, who think it's 'normal' to insult, and even attack, other people. Now, I doubt that the girls intended to murder that guy - it's likely that they 'just' intended to beat the crap out of an old man in a serious, unprovoked assault - but still, there's a price to be paid, and the Law must take its course. They don't deserve to be punished for assaulting and causing the death of a gay man, although of course homophobia played a significant role in their attack - they must be punished for assaulting, causing death, another person. Simple.
But, no matter what the sentence, it won't bring Mr Baynham back...
the culprit shall be in jail and be punished the hardest way public canning on television as well as whipping
to shows that no matter is it lesbian, gay or transgender all should be treated the same.
There was evidence from one witness that they overheard the girls, talking about a different gay couple (who were holding hands), saying "let's do them!". So it may be they were out to bash some gays. If the crime puts gays in fear in central London, it affects other people in addition to the immediate victims, and the law takes that into account.
This victim and his friend though were just friends, not holding hands or anything, just looked gay I suppose, and that was enough for these drunken louts to pick on them. If the evidence turns out to be that they were picking on people generally, and not particularly targetting a minority, I guess it's less likely to count legally as a hate crime, more as a drunken assault.
Geez..with such an ugly c.U. n.T like you for proxy here, who needs enemies. Yikes ! :P
Should each of them should be given a date, sometime in their 62nd year of life, the man would be punched to the ground and knocked unconscious, each of the women would be stomped on the chest and kicked in the head (they could choose if they wish to be punched to ground and knocked unconscious first before the stomping and kicking begins).
Is that cruel and unusual punishment because it adds years of anticipation of the punishment? If punishment is about deterrence of crime, how well would this form of anticipated punishment deter crime?
They can become fugitives but with technology, they probably wouldn't be too successful. Besides, how fast can 62 year olds outrun the law even if they have not become obese (or perhaps more obese in this case) with diabetes by then?
I NEVER mention a race, YOU just did IT - and this is NOT the first time you do it- that is what happens when you are so self-righteous.
The same to jammyboi, talking about Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South America and Uganda, at the 20 April article "US Lutheran Church abolishes anti-gay policies". he said:
"3 giant steps right back into the stone age with such backward countries to boot. Zzzz."
fat ass anglos is not a racist slur it sounds more like a statment of fact, anglo is a term we use in Australia to describe British decent Australians..or skippies..which is usually intended as derogatory by lebanese decent Australians but I think it's cute and use it too.
The sad result of this vicious assault and murder is 3 young people have ruined their own lives and one poor guy no longer has his to enjoy, trash are every where, they do it here and they are all races and yes these desert religions have a price to pay for instigating it.
Your original post suggested that the behaviour of the girls in the article was linked to their ethnicity, and you brought in unconnected references to racism, Australians, and expats. So thanks for re-editing the first part, though I'm still a bit puzzled by why you have this unrelated material in, which has nothing to do with this violent attack.
FYI, racism includes disparaging people because of their race, ethnicity, or nationality. "Anglos" obviously refers to their anglo-saxon ethnicity, and in the context of your original post it certainly came across as a racial attack that had nothing to do with the article.
I haven't experienced an expat community, but for what it's worth, if what I've heard about some British expats is true, then I agree some of them must be pretty annoying. However, it's also true that sometimes criticism of expats can stem from xenophobia or racism. Either way, it's wrong to generalise about a whole ethnic group or nationality, and I think we're in full agreement on that.
You may know a number of things and I'm sure you do, but hey you're not the only one and your attitude is both BORING and irritating. "It's wrong to generalize about a whole ethnic group..." blah blah blah why don't you ask yourself FIRST if what YOU do is right or wrong before you preach to us like a pompous university lecturer ?
I live in Bangkok where I see a lot of British expats and I happen to think that YES, they tend to be arrogant and colonial. English being the international language they probably can't help feeling that the world belongs to them. Or maybe they think that they still live in the XIXth century. Either way, MOST of them are annoying, just like you as a matter of fact and for the very same reasons.
If you could start writing LESS OFTEN on this board, it would give us all a holiday.
did they try and rob the poor old guy? what is the motive here?
anyway, I gonna take four hot studs to play polo in Hawaii for a mother's day tournament and all proceeds will go to the trevor project to stop senseless bullies in their tracks
dont get distracted from bullies including ones that try to distract you from some serious crimes at hand, I am sure justice will see the light of day
I do hope we can have more articles about Glee and happy gay stuff instead of all the death notices, Fridae is becoming a daily dose of reading the obituary pages,
its like when I was a kid and I would dread having my great Uncle Morty over for coffee with his tales of living through the Dachau concentration camp
this stuff is really dreadful
While this is in no way justification for the extent to which the girls and the other guy went, and in no way lessens my sympathy for the deceased person, it is worth finding out the facts before espousing opinions here.
I read most "original" articles and I find it perfectly proper to confront/defend bullies who abuse you. From your twisted manner of illogic, you would be the type of anyone stupid enough to call you "friend" to cowardly flee and leave them to be beaten to death in a similar situation. Interesting. Below is one of the "original" articles for better understanding before espousing opinions.

Yawn..Zzz. My my, such plays on semantics. Clearly from your original pouting of "racist" comments and thereafter twisting around semantically to deny with accusations against others, only confirms you are a cyber troll and belong to the same backward mentality of those cesspool movements in Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South America and Uganda, the very same groups that support "Kill the Gays and their Friends" Bill. Pointless to waste more cyber ink on "anglos" unlike you.
PS: Lose some weight. It just may save you when you run for your life should "Kill The Gays" bill ever reaches the place you're at. But do live to talk about it, ya? Perhaps that would make you a nicer person more attuned to your persecuted brothers on Earth Day.
i wonder what motivated these girls to do such a thing. where are the police? trafalgar square is monitored by a 24-hour cctv, how could this hate crime happen? put these homophobes in jail and teach them some lesson!
Well said. Bravo!
I'd like to add that his prose is not only boring but also somewhat pompous.
THE DAILY MAIL is NOT well known for the accurcay of its reporting.
Should a 62 year old man physically attack an 18 yr old girl for calling him names is an interesting question which I could debate with you for hours I'm sure. Who here is the coward and who is the bully. Interesting.
Could it be said possibly that an adult male slapping an 18 yr old girl is the act of cowardice?
If Nelson Mandela, Gandhi et al would have resorted to physical retribution for the DECADES of abuse they suffered the world would be in a bit of a mess methinks. THEY were brave. Slapping is not brave - whatever the provocation.
Is turning the other cheek a "cowardly" (as you put it) option? Or is it a sign of maturity that a person can react maturely to childish verbal attacks - whatever the nature of the verbal attack may be.
You don't seem to have read or understood the Daily Mail article properly either.
Also #44
You don't seem to have read or understood that a coward is a coward by any other circumstance.
I am not sure of your syntax when u say "a coward is a coward by any other circumstance" - can't work out what that is supposed to mean.
But what I shall say is that it takes a brave man to turn the other cheek and not descend to the level of an aggressor.
Violence begets violence.

That is an UNDENIABLE truth.
These days, cowards and trolls comes in all shape and sizes. How's that for more syntax? Do try all you BS above when it's your turn to encounter gay bashers. Remember, be careful when you have your stiff lower lip kicked in, syntax begets syntax. :D
Ok, wasted enough time on your bull already. Next...
P.S -Many of the above comments are pretty amusing, in a grim sense...it seems we place too much importance on political-correctness other than the fact that a man had his life brutally ended by 3 unruly chavs.
