UN urges Brunei to delay new law mandating stoning of gay people

Brunei has adopted a new penal code that calls for death by stoning for same-sex relations and will come into effect April 22.

Same-sex relations have long been a crime in Brunei, but the maximum punishment till now has been a 10-year prison sentence.
The United Nations human rights office has voiced deep concern about the revised penal code in Brunei Darussalam which stipulates the death penalty for numerous offences, including robbery, adultery, and insult or defamation of the Prophet Mohammed, reports un.org.
It introduces stoning to death as the specific method of execution for crimes of a sexual nature, including those of same-sex relations.
Rape, adultery, sodomy, extramarital sexual relations for Muslims, insulting any verses of the Quran and Hadith, blasphemy, declaring oneself a prophet or non-Muslim, and murder are the other offences for which the death penalty could be applied under the revised code.
“Application of the death penalty for such a broad range of offences contravenes international law,” said Rupert Colville, spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
“We urge the Government to delay the entry into force of the revised penal code and to conduct a comprehensive review ensuring its compliance with international human rights standards,” he told a news conference in Geneva.
Noting that Brunei has maintained an effective moratorium on the use of the death penalty since 1957, OHCHR urged the Government to establish a formal moratorium and to work towards abolishing the practice altogether.
Among other measures, the revised code introduces stoning to death as the specific method of execution for rape, adultery, sodomy and extramarital sexual relations.
“Under international law, stoning people to death constitutes torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and is thus clearly prohibited,” stated Colville.
The criminalization and application of the death penalty for consensual relations between adults in private also violates a whole host of rights, including the rights to privacy, equality, freedom from arbitrary arrest and detention, Colville noted.
“The provisions of the revised penal code may encourage further violence and discrimination against women and also against people on the basis of sexual orientation,” he warned.
Muslim-majority Brunei gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1984. It has developed wealth from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields and is classified as a developed country.
The country is built on three pillars of Malay culture, Islamic religion, and the monarchy. Under Brunei’s  constitution, His Majesty Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah is the head of state with full executive authority and serves as Prime Minister, Finance Minister and Defence Minister.

Considering their Head of State is named
"His Majesty -
Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah"
I definately suspect Brunei may indeed be inhabited by, (at least a few), "extra-terrestrials" :)

You won't ever see me stoned in Brunei!

Seriously though, it's disturbing to think about the nature of a society where people would be willing or encouraged to participate in such barbaric practices.
26. 2014-04-19 05:56
Also stoning for declaring yourself a non-muslim! Pretty desperate to retain their followers...

Public declaration of affection, love, affairs and relations of any sorts are not necessary nor does it guarantee that love and relation will last forever. Such declaration is even unnecessary in societies when homosexuals and lesbians like ours are not welcomed. When is the wars between straights, homosexuals and lesbians is going to end? Let keep our affairs within the boundaries of our homes.

1. Do not worry, Brunei is small country, when everybody will breed, then no more space to walk, to breath then they will kill each other.

Because the country not expanding. except making imperialism to other countries resulting war, hate, Libel

So, Brunei Law actually potential core on supporting Riots/ Killing/ Lie / Libel in many other countries.

2. So, you must support Brunei for anti-gay law, they will cry by theirselves Sins.

3. If there many people that smart, proffesionals, experts then they must know to investigate potential problems at everywhere.

If these people can not investigate the problems, then they possible actually involve in supporting the problems.

Who will punish them?
Are they immun from Law?
If everybody the same in front of Law of God.

Or Are they actually Hidden God?
If they are Immun from Law, they must be "God"
Mean they must get punishment, because there only one God.
so, simple.

4. All problems in The world caused by people want to go to Heaven but they do not be sent to beautiful Heaven yet. this so simple thing make complex problem.

5. so simple solution: just send them to Heaven then they will be very happy in Heaven
Reducing problems on earth

They should first start with Prince Azim, the 2nd son of the Sultan. That boy is literally the love child of Boy George and Madonna. The palace is full of carnal sin, if they really want to be morally righteous, start by "cleansing" themselves.

The people who enacted such laws are really sick as their religion failed to teach them the basic tenet preached by all religions - showing compassion for all living things, our environment and mankind regardless of religion, skin colour, creed and sexual orientation.

This country seemed so forward and friendly, I had been thinking of visiting there, but I certainly will not now. I just feel sad, so very sad for any poor gay guy there. I could sadly imagine at happening in backward Uganda, but not a first world country like this. Shame shame shame!

1. Many people become victim of Hollybook Author and Prophet descendants
2. Even The Majesty Paduka seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah M Waddaulah also become Victim of Hollybook verses. that make him sinful.

3. Everybody is the same in front of God, infact Hollybook Author and prophets become immun from Law. There is no punisment to propets and their descendant yet. Offcourse, it is against God.
It look like satan collaboration.

4. There must be penal code of pusnishment for Hollybook Author and prophet descendant, they make us fighting each other.
They make verses with multi interpretation and contain potential of hate, libel, terrorism, Murder, Lie, etc.

5. Just look around the globe, so many victims for years but none punish them. If we do not punish them, mean that we are against God. That is extreme sin.

6.For the shake of God, we all people in the world should punish them.
