Earlier this year, at The Economist Pride and Prejudice 2018 conference in Hong Kong, the LGBTQ Glassdoor project was featured as one of the three finalists in the Asian region for projects that support the LGBTQIA+ Community and their rights.
The directory has now launched in Hong Kong and presents a unique opportunity for individuals to recommend inclusive workplaces to the LGBTQ Community.
The web-based directory is designed to help LGBTQ individuals find inclusive workplaces in Hong Kong. The listings on the website are submitted anonymously by individuals, LGBTQ-identified and allies, who feel an organisation (e.g. company, NGO, or public agency) to be LGBTQ-friendly.Many people in Hong Kong are not out in the workplace, even when a company has explicit same-sex or trans policies and benefits. At the same time, there may be companies that have no official policies, but have been supportive on individual cases when they are raised. Some organizations may have LGBTQ individuals and allies who want to be visible to attract more diverse colleagues. The LGBTQ Glassdoor is meant to help capture these possibilities for LGBTQ-identified individuals to find positions within better work environments. As listings are submitted by individuals (similar to how TripAdvisor works) and as teams can change over time, the submissions have a time stamp for visitors to see when they were last updated. The LGBTQ Glassdoor as a directory is meant to be a starting point for individuals to find information and for listed organizations to work towards greater inclusion. The LGBTQ Glassdoor is an opensource directory built as a side project by a local Hong Kong software development agency, Oursky, and continues to be run by individual volunteers.
