Local rights advocates praised leaders for tackling discrimination but say more needs to be done.
LGBT Cambodians met with the government last week to discuss equality in the Southeast Asian nation. Ly Pisey, the coordinator of Rainbow Community Kampuchea, is reported to have said that government policies meant LGBT discrimination was decreasing. However, he also warned that the LGBT Community needed more legislation for their rights to be better protected.
Cambodia’s LGBT Community experience a greater level of freedom compared to some of their Southeast Asian neighbors. Same-sex sexual activity is legal and society largely tolerates LGBT people, with trans and non-binary identities being part of local culture. Furthermore, Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni and his father, the previous king, have both been vocal in their support for same-sex marriage. Already in 2004, Cambodia scrapped laws explicitly banning same-sex unions.
However, activists last week told the government that more needs to be done. There is currently no legislation to protect LGBT Cambodians from discrimination and Pisey said the LGBT Community seeks more legal protections.
