Canadian-born Chinese singer-songwriter Jason Qiu has released his single, Lone Wolf, along with its companion Cantonese version, 深空漂流 (Drifting), the first set of several dual singles in anticipation of his forthcoming English and Chinese language EPs, both to be released in August 2022.
The emotional single, produced by Turkish sound designer Uğur Can Akkaya of santilitre, tells the story of the long, lonely and often unrewarding journey of pursuing one’s passions.
The music video for Lone Wolf, which features Qiu alongside other local Chinese models, was directed by Eugene Chok.
With his vulnerable, emotion-laden vocal lines, Qiu sets his raw, introspective and melancholic yet intentionally ambiguous storytelling and imagery against ambient, synthetic sonic textures.
After stints in several local bands, Qiu became a solo artist after a choir director told him during an audition that he couldn’t hear his voice. F
or Qiu, his new identity as a solo performer is as much a personal as it is a musical one, and is his attempt at rediscovering himself and finding a voice that he and his listeners can truly hear and resonate with.
Performing in both Chinese and English, Qiu’s songs are monologues and musings on sadness, trauma and painful life experiences, subjects he is often unable to articulate succinctly in real life.
