The Last Kiss

Director: Tony Goldwyn

Starring: Zach Braff, Jacinda Barrett, Casey Affleck

Release: 2006-11-28

The Last Kiss is a drama about immature guys in their late 20s and early 30s who resist growing up and settling down. Although you may think a film like this would be relevant to the gay male crowd, it really isn't. Its lessons are targeted specifically at straight men, and lack universality.

It stars Zach Braff (from Scrubs) as a 29-year-old man with a terrific girlfriend (the lovely and talented Jacinda Barrett) but isn't sure whether he is ready to get married. So he has a casual fling with a uni student (Rachel Bilson from The O.C.) just to feel young and free again. Meanwhile, his married best friend (Casey Affleck) cannot cope with the challenges of being a being a young father, so decides to leave his wife and baby. Another friend can't get over an ex-girlfriend and wants to skip town, while another can't stop sleeping around.

There is nothing here we haven't seen before. To make matter worse, all these guys come across as selfish and irresponsible scumbags, rather than complex and sympathetic characters. If you want better drama, superior acting and sharper dialogue, you're better off staying at home and watching TV series like Grey's Anatomy, Lost or E.R.
