The Tattooist

Director: Peter Burger

Starring: Jason Behr, Mia Blake, Nathaniel Lees, David Fane, Caroline Cheong

Release: 2007-11-27

Jason Behr may look meek and taciturn on the TV show Roswell. But he's certainly buffed up and grown some stubble, making him look more handsome than he's ever looked before. It also helps that movie begins with a brief shot of his gorgeous naked butt.

He plays The Tattooist himself, who becomes cursed after he accidentally cut his hand on a Samoan tattooing instrument. Soon after, the people around him start to die. Often, their bodies are found to be completely tattooed from head to toe. Is he responsible for their deaths? If so, how can he stop it?

Delving into the Samoan culture and superstition, The Tattooist isn't the perfect horror film. But it is a fairly enjoyable horror film with an original concept. The special effects and horror makeup are professional, while the performances are generally strong.

Jason Behr gives a low-key but very watchable performance, Mia Blake shines as his love interest while Nathaniel Lees is particularly convincing as a Samoan man living in shame. What was truly awful, however, was Caroline Cheong's cardboard performance as the flirtatious Asian party girl. Surely, there are many better Asian actresses than her.

A collaboration between Singapore's Raintree Pictures and New Zealand's Touchdown Pictures, this is certainly one locally-produced picture Singaporeans don't have to be ashamed of.
